On May 6, 2016, officer Stephen Mader stood up close and personal with the barrel of a silver pistol held by Mr. Williams. However, officer Mader chose not to shoot. He understood the situation and wisely recognized that the young man with the pistol was trying to get Mader to shoot him. Mader called it “suicide by cop.” So as Mader patiently waited for backup to arrive, he tried to calm down Mr. Williams. Before he knew it, backup had arrived and shot Mr. Williams dead as he waved his gun around.

It was later reported that the gun of Mr. Williams was not loaded. It was simply an attempt of “suicide by cop.” This attempt worked, but at the same time, Mader’s failure to take care of business on his own cost him the job.

Mader, a former Marine, served in Afghanistan. He was informed on June 7 that he was released due to his “difficulties in reasoning.” His termination letter also stated that he failed to meet the standards of an officer.

Williams had just had his first kid, who happened to be the first baby born in the Trinity Medical Center. All of this was found out after the occurrence of his death.

Mader filed a lawsuit that he was wrongly terminated and that the city was out to get him. Mader said that Williams was not yelling or angry, rather he seemed distraught.

To this day, Mader cannot believe that he was fired for doing what he thought was right. “To tell a police officer, when in doubt, either shoot to kill, or get fired is a choice that no police officer should ever have to make.”
